Take Us On a Thrill Ride

Chapter 5... Rollercoaster of insanity? I believe so. From meeting a professor to forming a "human being" in a matter of months, Frankenstein is out of his mind! Dropping the family he once held so dear, he strives after a new discovery of his own... That we have yet to figure out!

When we first meet Frankenstein when he hops aboard the vessel, we see that he is a wise, kind, bright fellow; however, taking us back to the past, we see the other side: the time when "evil" begins to delight itself deep inside his soul, as he begins to find his past, present, future, and ultimately his whole identity in science. Now I begin to see how the quote "with great knowledge comes great responsibility" comes into play... However, I believe that quote should maybe include that with great knowledge is the need of....SANITY! After beginning to see his obsession in science for the first time, my complete outlook on the character of Frankenstein has already changed drastically since the first time we meet him in one of the letters only a few chapters earlier.

Can something we love so much change our personality as a whole?

  1. Nathan, this is a model for a thoughtful literature blog because it asks the big questions, the questions I think Shelley wants us to ask. Your question is profound, and I'd have to answer in the affirmative; in fact, I'd be so bold as to say we ARE what or who we love.
    Keep up the profound introspection!

  2. Wow! I really like your blog! I feel that the question you posed is a very important aspect of every day life. Personally, I agree with the statement Mr. Davis made, "We ARE what or who we love." When a person loves something it takes over the person's thoughts and actions. That is similar to Captin Walton traveling to the North Pole, or, like you mentioned, Frankenstein creating a creature. Both of these men are portraying their love of knowledge.

  3. I totaly agree that science is taking over Victor and driving him insane. I also agree with Mr. Davis that we are or what we love. Science is what Victor loves and he will put everything he has into his creation.
